Art meets
fashion isn’t a new concept. But a model-free show at MBFWA is pretty
unprecedented. I guess they figured, what can supersede a giant pop-up comic
book or a mystic alien trance world? Romance Was Born SS14/15 is shown as an
exhibition, where couture-esque designs are displayed on suspended mannequins. Romance
Was Born co-designer Luke Sales says he’s “very happy about not using models
this year”. The raw architectural elements of the Carriageworks are drenched kaleidoscopic
light shows, created through a manipulation of sequins, glass and reflective
surfaces. All the pieces were intricately designed using a myriad of textiles
from streamers to plates of coloured glass. The main cohesive element seemed to
be the iridescent nature of the collection. Most pieces are almost completely
unwearable for the general population. But undoubtedly will be seen on
progressive celebrities facing the uneducated criticism of tabloid magazines –
cue “what was she thinking?!” Regardless, the presentation has us thinking,
what could possibly be next?
